Christmas on the wine tram

The wine tram runs every day of the festive season except four: 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. Around those gaps sits the busiest, hottest stretch of the year, and a little planning makes the difference between a long lunch and a long wait on a platform.

Summer is high season in the Cape Winelands. December to February brings the long days, the school holidays and the heat, and the tram sells its limited daily tickets faster than at any other time.

This post covers the closed days, how far ahead to book, how to cope with an open-air vehicle in the midday sun, and what to do if your free day lands on Christmas Eve.

The quick answer

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, and runs daily otherwise. Book as early as you can: tickets per day are limited and seats are not held without payment. Take a morning departure, a hat and water, and plan three estates instead of five.

Which days is the wine tram closed over Christmas and New Year?

Four days: 24 December, 25 December, 31 December and 1 January. The service runs daily on the other days.

The official FAQ says the service runs daily except on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. That leaves Boxing Day and 2 January as normal operating days, and both fall in the middle of the holiday weeks, so expect them to be busy.

The closure covers the tram itself. Estates keep their own festive hours, and some lunch venues fill up weeks ahead, so book a table at least 24 hours before your tram day, as the FAQ asks, and much earlier if you can.

How early should you book a tram day in peak season?

As soon as your dates are fixed. The operator sells a limited number of tickets per day and does not reserve seats without payment.

The FAQ calls booking ahead highly recommended because of the daily ticket limit. December weekends and the days between Christmas and New Year are the ones to secure first. Tickets are collected at the ticket office on the day; a digital confirmation is fine.

There is one extra date for the diary. The Franschhoek Wine Valley site lists the Cap Classique & Champagne Festival at the Huguenot Monument on 5 and 6 December 2026. The village will be full that weekend. If you want the tram rather than the festival, pick another weekend, or a weekday that week. Programme details are on the events page.

Booking through GetYourGuide works the same way in principle: the coach-and-tram day from Cape Town shows live availability for your date, and holiday dates go first.

How do you cope with the heat on an open-air tram?

Start early, cover up and drink water between tastings. The top deck of the tram and the tram-buses are open, and summer afternoons in the valley are hot.

Much of the day is spent on open-air tram-buses rather than on the rails, and the double-decker trams have an open top deck. Shade comes and goes. Wear a hat, put on sunscreen before you leave, and choose light clothes and flat shoes: you climb on and off vehicles all day, and at some big estates a farm vehicle takes 10 to 20 minutes from the platform to the tasting room.

Water matters more than anything. The FAQ does not allow outside food or open alcohol, but both terminals sell coffee and cold drinks. Ask for water at every tasting, and use the spittoon. Our pick for December is the first departure of the morning. Departures from the Franschhoek Terminal run roughly every 30 minutes from 9:30, and you finish your last tasting before the late-afternoon heat and the queue for the ride home.

What can you do on the days the tram is closed?

Pick a tour that does not use the tram, or walk the village. The walking, e-bike and food tours run on their own calendars, so check your date on each listing.

The tram's closed days do not apply to other operators. Each GetYourGuide listing shows its own available dates, so check the 24th or the 31st there before you plan around it.

Three options skip the tram. The storytelling walk covers four kilometres between Mont Rochelle, Mullineux & Leeu and La Cotte, with ten wines and lunch in its Includes list. The e-bike and wine tour rides farm roads to two small estates; the listing says 18 and over, with a minimum height of 140 cm. The full-day winelands tour drives a small group of up to 11 through Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch with pairings and lunch.

On a slow day the village is enough. Walk the main road to the Huguenot Monument at its far end, and stop for coffee on the way. Our one or two days in Franschhoek guide has more ideas.

No tram needed: a guided vineyard walk, ten wines at three farms and a harvest-style lunch.

Is the festive season a good time for the wine tram?

Yes, if you book early and keep the plan small. Long days and summer wines suit the tram; crowds and heat punish a five-estate plan.

The tram runs one way, with about an hour between vehicles at each stop. In a quiet month, a missed tram costs you a little time. In late December, a full tram-bus can cost you an estate. Three estates with a booked lunch in the middle is a better day than five rushed ones.

Think about the ride home too. The FAQ allows Uber but warns that finding one after 5 pm can be hard, and in peak season that gets worse. A day with a coach back to Cape Town, like the wine tram day from Cape Town, removes that worry. For a guided version where someone else handles the timing, the Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and tram day includes a short tram ride; its listing says the tram and the tastings are paid extras.

Can you change or cancel a holiday booking?

On a direct booking, a date change is possible 24 hours or more ahead if there is space, and cancelling at least 24 hours before gives a full refund.

The official FAQ allows no cancellation on the day and no refund under 24 hours. If the operator cancels for weather or mechanical reasons, which it says is rare, you are refunded. The tram and the tram-bus are fairly well protected from rain, so a summer shower is no reason to stay home.

GetYourGuide listings carry their own terms, shown on each listing. The coach-and-tram day offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If your holiday dates are not fixed yet, that is the safer way to hold a peak-season seat. Before you book, our guide on whether the wine tram is worth it covers what the day is really like.
